Who we are:
Stillwater Farms is a family run farm located in Homosassa
What does it mean to be sustainable?
In many ways, to be a sustainable farm means much more than "organic". Sustainable agriculture involves stewardship of both natural and human resources, and emphasizes the importance of local community.
We strive to be sustainable in the methods we use, which seek to feed the soil without detrimental impacts to our ecosystem. We feed the soil, not the plant. Only in healthy soils will plants thrive without the assistance of synthetic (petroleum-based) fertilizers and pesticides. This means compost, compost, compost! We reduce landfill materials through our composting, which utilizes food scraps, leaves, wood chips, manures, and worm castings. We also grow what is best in tune with its natural environment each season, so that little additional resources are needed, such as frost cloths, plastics, extra water, pesticides etc. We also plan to re-use storage containers; this is why you may see our labels posted over previous ones. Doug uses only natural and organic approved sprays (OMRI Listed) on the farm.
By farming and feeding our local communities, we are also sustainable in the sense that our food is not shipped thousands of miles away consuming and expelling natural resources. This also means fresher food, most of your items from our farm were picked the day before you received them. Doug, who works the land, also lives in our community, therefore profits stay in our local community to benefit our local economy. This all translates into the healthiest, freshest and safest food for our family and yours!
